People Places Stories
A place-based intervention to reframe social care for older people. People Places Stories reimagines Plymouth City Centre as an intergenerational place. Through repurposing unwanted retail space and providing the infrastructure necessary for healthy ageing in place, communities remain a mix of all ages.
A central physical space provides community focus, and houses essential community services, such as a health centre and pre-school, alongside recreation and leisure facilities, such as exercise classes and performances. It uses creative placemaking techniques to inspire and galvanise the community.
Finally it provides a gentle, encouraging way for members of the community to connect across generational boundaries. Harnessing the power of storytelling to create connections across difference, through an interactive instalation.
Role
-
MA Design (sustainable futures) student.
People Places Stories was my final project for my MA Design course, after spending two very happy years exploring the potential design has to improve society. I departed with a passion for user-centred service design, place and placemaking, the power of storytelling, knowing what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and a distinction.
